The Washington-Wilkes High School wrestling team closed out the first half of its season with a strong performance at the Viking Invitational Tournament at Treutlen County High School December 18- 19. Two Tiger wrestlers won their weight classes at the competition.

The young Tiger team, with only one senior and one junior in the lineup, placed ninth out of a 19-team field that included state powers in AA, AAA, and AAAAA.

Sophomore David Martin, at 160 lbs., and senior Tyrance Ashmore, at 215 lbs., both took first place at the tournament. Martin defeated David Smith of Ware County in the finals to cap off a 7-0 weekend. Ashmore downed Colby Jowers of Jeff Davis to take first.

Other Tigers with strong showings were Dennis Hagan (130 lbs.), Federian Tatum (135 lbs.) and Rob Lovvorn (140 lbs.) who each collected three wins. Damarcus Grant (103 lbs.), Josh McLeroy (119 lbs.), and Will Lawson (171 lbs.) won two matches each. Jesus Maldanado (145 lbs.) and Eddy Herrera (152 lbs.) also scored wins.

Next up for the Tiger Matmen was the Hurricane Duals at Monroe Area on December 30, where W-W faced off against state-ranked AAA West Forsyth, as well as Blessed Trinity, and Gwinnett County’s AAAAA Mountain View. Results will be reported as soon as they are available.

Despite its youth the Tigers have put together a solid season with dual meet wins over Monticello, Greene County, Oglethorpe County, and Hart County. Martin leads the Mat Tigers with an undefeated record of 18-0. Tyrance Ashmore is next at 12-3, with two of his losses coming when he was bumped up to the 285-lb. weight class.

Junior Matthew Howard is a veteran wrestler who has been out with a knee injury, but will return after Christmas. Herrera, Maldanado, Alex Hackney, and A.J. Meyers are young wrestlers who have stepped into the starting lineup and are gaining valuable experience. As usual, the Mat Tigers regularly compete against tough competition from larger schools to prepare for area and state tournaments in February.

The Middle School Mat Tigers have also enjoyed a solid season led by Jack Martin and Austin Hackney.

Both the varsity and middle school teams will return home on January 5 for a tri-meet against AAAA powers Jackson County and Evans. Matches begin at 5 p.m. at the W-WCHS gym.
