Tourism director will go part time to devote more attention to family

Wilkes County Tourism Director Ashley Barnett has announced that she will cut her schedule back to part time to spend more time with her family.

“After over a year of thinking and praying about this decision, I have decided to go part-time, working two days a week, beginning January 1,” she said. “I want to be at home more with my family. I love my job so much, but I love being home with my son Porter and my husband Ames, not to mention our dog Murphy, so I’m going from full time to part time. Ames and I love Washington and we want to do whatever we can to contribute and help make it the best possible place to live.”

Barnett said she will still be doing all of the county tourism public relations, marketing, working with the media and promoting different events.

“I love promoting our town and will continue to do it to the best of my ability,” she said. “I will be working to help continue the growth of tourism and keeping Washington-Wilkes in the eye of visitors throughout the state and the southeast, and I will continue to work with our state and federal legislatures and their offices.”

Wilkes County has posted a job opening for Tourism. “The County will be hiring a full-time person to fill my position, and they will work here at the Chamber of Commerce,” she said. “I will be training that person and come alongside of them to help.”

Barnett said that in the four years she has been here she has become indebted to all the people who helped her. “I want to thank everyone for their support and for assisting me along the way. I am so very thankful and blessed to work for our community. Washington-Wilkes is a place like no other!”
