Governor Deal appoints Ashley Barnett to state Board of Nursing seat

Washington’s Ashley Turner Barnett has been appointed to the Georgia Board of Nursing.

In an announcement from Gov. Nathan Deal’s office, Barnett, Wilkes County’s Director of Media Relations and Marketing, was appointed last week as the consumer member of the state nursing board. “I’m very honored to have been chosen for this appointment,” Barnett said. “I start next month, and I’m looking forward to serving.”

Barnett has been a frequent visitor to the state capitol on tourism business, meeting with the governor, legislators, and department heads, and was recently chosen as one of 60 members of the 2011 class of Leadership Georgia. She and her husband, Washington City Councilman Ames Barnett, actively supported the campaign of Governor Deal in Wilkes County.

Reporting to the Secretary of State’s office, the Georgia Board of Nursing is made up of eight members appointed by the Governor and is responsible for the regulation of registered professional nurses and advanced practice registered nurses.

The board includes seven registered professional nurses and an eighth consumer member, the seat to which Barnett was appointed. The board’s responsibilities include developing rules and regulations that set the standards for nursing practice and education, providing the minimum qualifications for licensure, and ensuring that disciplinary process is implemented in a fashion that guarantees due process and public protection.

Barnett is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in public relations and a minor in speech communications. Active in the community, she serves on the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Wills Memorial Hospital Foundation and is a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Woman’s Club, and the Spring Tour of Homes Committee. She, Ames, and their son Porter are members of Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling.
