Wilkes County Animal Shelter to hold open house Sunday for new facilities

The newly rebuilt Wilkes County Animal Shelter will be open to the public Sunday, October 2, from 2-4 p.m., and Director Gloria Wheatley is excited to show off the new facility.

“It’s going to be a top-notch facility that the people of Wilkes County can be proud of,” she said. “It’s going to be a showplace.”

The new complex was the work of many hands, Wheatley said, and most of those involved with the shelter are expected to be at Saturday’s open house. “We’re expecting people from the vet school, from rescue groups, members of our Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter board, and all our wonderful volunteers, but we want the whole community to come out and see what a wonderful facility we have now.”

The new facility features 20 new double dog kennels, designed to keep dogs and the kennel clean and dry. The main building houses administrative offices, a meeting room, medical facilities, a laundry space, and isolation areas for dogs that require it.
