Washington Optimists to hold annual 5k race this Saturday

This Saturday, November 1, the fourth annual Washington Optimist 5K will kick off at 8:15 a.m. at the Wilkes County courthouse. Previous races have attracted more than 100 runners from all over the state.

The course will have runners covering five kilometers – a little over three miles – through the historic streets of Washington, with awards for the top runners in each age group. “The race benefits local youth programs including scholarships to graduating seniors and continues our commitment to ‘bring out the best in kids,’” organizer Peggy Anderson said. “The course is relatively flat with a few rolling hills.”

Registration is $17 ($20 with a T-shirt) before October 14, $20 ($25) afterward and on Saturday. Applications are available online at www.active.com.

Awards will be presented to Overall M/F, Masters M/F, and top three M/F in age groups beginning 10-and-under through 75-and-over in five-year increments.

Packet pickup and race day registration will begin at 7 a.m. More information is available at www.active.com.
