Trick-or-treating, a costume contest, movie start at 5:30

Appropriately scheduled for this coming Friday the 13th, an evening of fun and frights will entertain people all ages on The Square in downtown Washington.

“Scare on The Square” will start at 5 p.m. when kids can pick up their official Downtown Washington Trick or Treat bags at the Welcome Center.

Trick-or-treating will commence at 5:30 in all the stores and shops around The Square.

Kids and adults can enter the costume contest in which prizes will be awarded at 7 p.m. in a variety of categories. First, second, and third place winners will receive gift certificates for downtown shopping.

For the safety of participants, and especially the children, The Square will be closed for the entire event.

“This will be a fun event for our children,” City Administrator Sherri Bailey said. “There is no need for them to bring their own trick-or-treat bag – the City will be handing out Official Downtown Treat bags for them to use and the City, along with merchants and others will be handing out candy.”

At 7:30 p.m. the next in the series of movies on The Square will feature Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker starring in the 1993 American comedy horror fantasy film Hocus Pocus.

In the 96-minute PG film, three witch sisters are resurrected after three centuries in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night, and it is up to two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to their reign of terror once and for all.
