First step on earth after resurrection

(John 20:1-18)

When Jesus resurrected from the dead His first step was made when He visited with Mary Magdalene outside his tomb on the morning Mary visited the sepulcher to finish putting sweet spices on the Body of Jesus. This was early Sunday morning, and all four Gospels tell us about Mary and some other women making this visit to the tomb to finish the burial of Jesus.

This first step Jesus made on earth after his resurrection is very important for us to know about, and to understand what it means for all of us. Who is Mary Magdalene? We are told in Mark’s Gospel that she is the person from which Jesus cast seven devils out, meaning that she was totally possessed by the devil at one time in her life.

Mary Magdalene can certainly represent all of us as human beings because we are all possessed by the devil in our lives before we meet Jesus and accept Him to be our Saviour.

We are told through Jesus’ first step on earth after His resurrection that Mary represents all of us. This is really why Jesus went to the Cross and died to free us from our sins just as He freed Mary Magdalene from her sins and the devil when she met Jesus during His ministry on Earth before His death on the Cross for mankind. The last words Jesus spoke before His death on the Cross were, “It is finished.”

Mary Magdalene’s visit to Jesus’ tomb early that Sunday morning is a witness to us that we all need to have a visit with Jesus. We have sinned against God and humanity, therefore we are in need for a spiritual saviour in Jesus just like Mary Magdalene understood when she met Jesus before He went to the Cross. Jesus died for all the sins of mankind. Mary Magdalene is a witness to us to meet Jesus and trust Him to be our Saviour. She continued her faith in Jesus, and was rewarded by God to be the first one to see Jesus after His resurrection.

The first words Jesus spoke to Mary were, “Woman why weepeth thou? Whom seekest thou?” Then He called her name, “Mary.” She immediately knew Him.

Because of this great witness through Jesus after His death on the Cross: to let Mary Magdalene be the first one to meet Jesus after his death and resurrection, we can all have faith that one day after our death we will be resurrected from the dead. Our faith in Him is liken unto the faith of Mary Magdalene when she said, “Rabboni, which is to say Master.” (verse 16) Jesus said to her: “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren and say unto them, “I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God and your God.” (verse 17) Mary came and told this message to the disciples and she tells this message to all of us. We can all now reach out and touch Jesus because He has now ascended unto His Father God in Heaven.
