UCAP plans series of events to remember MLK Jan. 19-21

A series of actvities and events organized by the United Community Awareness Program (UCAP) in Washington will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. over the course of three days beginning next Saturday, January 19, and lasting through the following Monday.

The annual MLK Breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. at the Third Shiloh Rev. G.L. Avery Center located at 212 McLendon Drive in Washington. The price is $7.

The celebration will continue on Sunday afternoon with a special service also at the Avery Center beginning at 3 p.m.

UCAP organizers have asked and invited all churches and community organizations to participate in the 18th annual Martin Luther King Day parade on Monday.

“We are all looking forward to having a wonderful time,” coordinator Adrienne Williams said. “The parade will be going down Whitehall Street, turning right on Robert Toombs Avenue, and will disperse behind the courthouse.”

Parade participants will line up at noon on Whitehall Street at the old laundromat next to the Wynn residence and are asked to check in with either Williams or Melvene Binns. The price for entering a float in the parade is $12.

The parade will commence at 1 p.m. Participants are invited to return to the Avery Center immediately after the parade ends where a special meal will be prepared.

“Please come and help us celebrate these wonderful occasions honoring our legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” Williams invited.
